This scene was enough to rope me in. Everything about this show is so balanced. I guess thats the problem?

I liked it and will watch S2 as well. Liked it enough to get the book and read it recently.
But as you said it's just "balanced" - generic stuff well done. Nothing fancy and the topic (ex military, cop, ...) will not get anyone on the internet /social media freak out. From what I read the numbers were good/great considering the (cheatp, no expensive cgi) budget.
