Slavery was a common fate for enemies defeated in battle and seen as just.
This is why the Catholic church banned slavery of Natives in the New World but allowed African slavery. Because the majority of Natives didn't make war and were just living there when the Spanish and Poortugese came, but the Africans were presumed to have been sold after defeat in battle
