I think the form of the plot is basically a tragedy: the people in the movie cause their own problems. But what's supposed to thought-provoking is that the film also depicts circumstances encouraging them to act that way—but these circumstances are caused, in part, by the way they act. It's not inevitable, anyone can break the cycle if they reject what they've become accustomed to, but there's nothing pushing them to do that.
