Three Kingdoms :marseyliondance:

As part of our cultural exchange with https://soyjak.party thanks to @HeDoesItForFree's API, I noticed that the erudite and cultured soyteens of /qa/ have a Three Kingdoms thread pinned so I think we should have a thread too. :marseysoy3:

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is one of the great Chinese epics based on the Warring States period at the end of the Han dynasty.

There are two big serialized adapatations of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one from 2010 and one from 1994.

I watched the 2010 some years ago and it's :marseygem:. The actor who plays Cao Cao is particularly good and has a unique take on the character.

I've been watching the 1994 one recently. It follows the book a little more closely and I think I may actually like it better.

It should be noted that this is fricking LONG but a great series highly worth the investment. If you liked the political intrigue stuff from Game of Thrones this series beats the shit out of it.

Whichever version you choose, I recommend reading along with the book. There is a great online translation here with lots of funny side notes from users

My favorite part was when Emperor Liu Bei visits a commoner, and the commoner is really embarrassed that he doesn't have any meat to serve his guest, so he chops up and cooks his wife

I like when one of Liu Bei's generals risks his life to save his infant son and he immediately punts him on the ground, possibly making him r-slurred, because "the life of his greatest subject is worth more than a mere :marseybib:"

This is presented as Liu Bei being selfless and honorable :marseyxd:

The chinese are wild :marseychingchong:

Brothers are like limbs, wives and children are like clothing. Torn clothing can be repaired; how can broken limbs be mended?

I've always wondered about this. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a joke but not 100% sure.

The narrator mentions the farmer tried to find another wife afterwards but nobody would go out with him, so yeah it's likely a joke.

It's a pretty based novel, I'd say it peaks with the Lu Pu saga which is unfiltered kino, in both the books and the shows, then slowly declines in quality over time. The last 100 pages of the book are a rushed 100 years of history after the end of the age of heroes, and you feel a noticeable decline in the romance aspect and a sort of shift to a slow grinding war of attrition. It really starts after the death of Chuko Liang and the Yi clan usurping T'sao T'sao. I guess that's thematically fitting as it shows China returning to its Imperial norm after the cycle has ended.

Kong Ming is a bit of a mary sue thoughbeit. He basically becomes Rick from Rick and morty and :marseyrick:'s his way out of every elaborate situation effortlessly. Being able to predict little things people do years in advance. It's sort of a shonen anime in a sense that you get a sense of the "power levels" of the generals and strategists, and each side has their hero elites which are comparable and sort of balanced (more loaded towards Shu being overpowered though).
