It sort of reminded me of the Walking Dead at multiple points. They even picked up two barely-fleshed-out characters just so they could kill them 10 mins later.
Maybe it would have worked better as a series. But I guess not giving them another 20 hours runtime to explore how much they're seething about Trump was a good thing, on balance. The editing reminded me of Handmaid's Tale, which was another example of seething over Rethuglicans masquerading as righteous badassery.

The problem is the goal was never to flesh out the background. Garland explicitly did not want to do that.
So any amount of expansion and exposition would've been just as boring and pointless.
