I have a file with 100s of film recommendations, most of them are from random /tv/ threads from the last 10 years. Without fail, every single one turns out to be really enjoyable at the minimum.
I saw a rental listing on craigslist a few years ago where the landlord randomly mentioned that as his favorite movie. Have never seen a bigger red flag.
It was a single small bedroom in a shared house for $1200 / month. Also the house was on some sort of "organic farm" and the listing insinuated renters would be expected to work on the farm.
Maybe there were some other red flags, but the movie jumped out at me.

A long time ago, I'm about to watch Dirty Harry. I'm really pumped because Roger Ebert said it was the most fascist movie he'd ever seen! Maybe it'll be like Death Wish 3!
And then... it turns out Dirty Harry just thinks the soft on crime stuff from the early 1970s went way too far. Like everyone who was alive back then. I was terribly disappointed and never trusted critics again. Definitely not him. As on Newsradio:
And then you would say "If I wanted to talk about movies I'd get that guy Siskel Ebert here." And I would say "Sir, those are two different people." And you would say "Just because the man is overweight doesn't mean you have to make fun of him."

San Francisco in Dirty Harry is an apocalyptic, crime-riddled city where social and infrastructural decay is rampant.
It looks better and more alive than the San Francisco of today.
My rule of thumb is that if a film is anything below 50% from audience is almost guaranteed to be unwatchable and 50-60% audience is dangerously close to that. However 80%-90% of audience is not a guarantee of a good movie.
As for critics typically 80-100% is almost guaranteed being good (unless Marvel slop or pretentious artsy film), but there are good films with a 50 something % score as long as they have an 80%+ of the audience.
Also, most films in the 60-79% range are in the "forgettable/mediocre" territory.
I love when you finally watch a classic movie, something you put off for ages because it's almost cliché, and it turns out to be as good if not better than its reputation.

I hate the whole idea of film critics. That isn't a real job, first of all, . Who decided to care what "critics" think? Just pirate the movie and decide for yourself
If the score is like 85% or greater for either the audience or critics while the other score is like >40% higher or lower difference then the rating is 100% due to culture war reasons. A high critic and low audience is a soy movie and a high audience and low critic is a rightoid movie.
The worst wanky films I've seen recently all had critics scores in the 90s and audience numbers between 65-75%, so the middle one doesn't have enough grade inflation. But then, I really like most of the A24 movies I've seen. Most recently because Maxxxine is coming out, I watched 'X' and 'Pearl', neither of which you could really call pretentious.
I just saw Hit Man which scored over 90 for both. It was just ok. Not great. I expected something either hilarious or more interesting based on the score.
