The adaptation debates sometimes seem to focus on the wrong things. A lot of the online seethe can be resumed to "MUUUG HECKIN LORERINO WAS CHANGED AHHHHGH
", lore changes alone are not enough reason to dismiss an adaptation, unless the lore changes disproportionately affect the plot or general themes on a negative manner by cutting internal consistency on the film/show, in other words, changing for the worse just for the sake of it while making characters and storylines stupid. Films are films, shows are shows and books are books. Any adaptation should be judged on its own terms, but at least in my opinion the general themes of the source material should be respected.
No, no one is raping Tolkien's legacy or your childhood because they produced an unfaithful adaptation, Tolkien's original work is still there to be appreciated and read. The reason why the Rings of Power is shit is not because it is a poor adaptation of the source material per se (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 1971 is a poor adaption of the book but a great film on it's own right), but because the show it's bad. Costumes look cheap, acting is mediocre, characters motivations are senseless or idiotic, fighting choreography is among the worst despite a seemingly unlimited budget and on the top of it, it was very boring. If the Silmarillion didn't exist and Rings of Power was an original show it would still suck balls. I didn't read the WoT series but I watched the first season of the Prime show and I thought it was boring as well, on the top of ugly and mediocre actors and bad effects.
Now "The Last of Us" is an interesting case, it was critically acclaimed and beloved by the general public with some of the highest ratings for HBO in years but there was a lot of online bitching because of changes. I'm not going to judge it because I didn't play the game so I can tell whether the changes made the plot worse (valid criticism) or if it didn't affect the quality/general themes.

The Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games shocked me in how acute their understanding of Sauron's power of domination,
And how the power of the One Rings MIND R*PE gave him incredible power even though in the books and movies even if it doesn't appear to give Sauron cool shit like the ability to cast level 25 fireballs,

This type of mentality demonstrates how appreciation for the themes and comprehension of the source material enhances the story, because it builds from existing foundations ,
Rather than hack frauds trying to give their untalented spin on shit and completely miss the themes and tone and motifs
