It's ironic that comic book movies suffer from the same issue comic books did. They tell a decent story (I assume they did at some point :marseyshrug: ) but the consume must continue so they can never end. Going on and on until even the flimsiest illusion of the story having consequences and actual weight is shattered.

God I hope it bankrupts Disney like it did the cb industry :marseyhope:

This tells me the 2030s will be filled with commercially successful western live action adaption hentai that will slowly degrade in quality by 2035 but limp along until 2039

What a glorious future we have to look forward to!

That was Netflix, Japan has been making live action adoptions of comics for decades. Anime is something that happens to children's comics and mediocre ones :marseyboomer:

Yeah, but it's getting destroyed by :marseyjapanese:

For comparison's sake and as per Business Insider, comic sales in 2021 hit record-breaking sales of $2.075 billion, with manga accounting for $1.47 billion. Attack on Titan was specifically cited as one of the best-selling manga titles of 2021. Meanwhile, single comics issues (which are comics' classic format) only accounted for $435 million.

Which is doubly hilarious since a 5 second google search can find you an online site you can pirate that shit for free weeks ahead of the official US release.

I'm going to ask you a tough question because I believe in you. I believe in everyone on rdrama. The answer is simple, but it will be challenging.

Please answer the following:

Why do I keep coming back here?

Because Reddit sucks butt and you can shitpost and act r-slurred here without some pearl clutching b-word tattling to the admins.

No, this website is not better than reddit. I can be as r-slurred as I want there. Where am I wrong? (There is more that I want to know about you)

Why can't American media do the same thing that Korean media does and have a 12-16 episode show and fully wrap things up in the last episode.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

As much as I agree that western media has a bad habit of leaving things unresolved, the truth is that they're not allowed to wrap things up in a single season without massive backlash because they need at least 10 seasons to recoup costs.

I get studios wanting to suck as much money out as they can so a little more room is fine, but 4-5 seasons max. Comedy, drama, thriller, doesnt matter. After that the shows are obvious just husks dying a slow death.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Right but Korean studios are presumably just as greedy so why don't they also do this?

Uh, how can you sell merch if you're not cockteasing audiences for 15 years?

Jump in the discussion.

It worked for them at first, the build up to end game or whatever was like 12 years long or something and massively successful

But yea, i think they would have benefited from a hiatus to work out a good game plan and story line. Instead they tried to ride the high and pushed out so much shit it was tiring

They needed a serious follow up to all that. They got very lucky with how it ended up, and it was new and different for moviegoers. You can't do it again without extra spice which they absolutely bombed at.

Especially when it came to having shows on Disney+. A 2 hour movie every 3-6 months is tolerable but having whole seasons and movies pumped out non-stop is more of a chore if you want to keep up (especially when they're DEI slop)

It's ironic that comic book movies suffer from the same issue comic books did. They tell a decent story (I assume they did at some point ) but the consume must continue so they can never end.

I wish this was the problem. Instead the real issue is that the writers/producers simply became lazy and complacent and thought that any slop they produced would turn into gold. They were wrong and now the MCU brand has been so damaged that most of their projects have been derailed.

Jump in the discussion.

I disagree. That's more a late stage symptom of the disease in my opinion. Since these products never end, they inevitably attract people with no talent for a few reasons. People with no talent gravitate towards popular properties in order to attach their work to it, to be identified with it, since their original material never gets picked up on its own.

What they lack in talent they more than make up with ego, so they refuse to moderate or compromise what they write. After all, they're so much smarter and more talented than the original creator :marseysurejan:

People with real talent either move on to their own original works eventually or cost too much (either monetarily or letting them have some ownership of what they write) for the property owners tastes. None of this is an issue with a story that truly ends.

Sure, I think we're describing the same phenomenon. I just don't think this sort of franchise sloppification is broadly inevitable, but instead reflects particular cultural trends that will hopefully eventually correct or reverse themselves.
