The fact that CGI is now often cheaper than practical effects is a disaster for science fiction.
Take this Scarran... what a mean-looking motherlover. And it has a real physical presence that interacts with the other actors and environment. I shudder to think what a CGI Scarran would be like.

That's a huge point that people gloss over when people discuss what is lost with cgi. The disconnect between the actors and the world around them is definitely noticeable in the Star Wars prequels, for example, and when you watch the 'making of' documentaries it's easy to see why. Just a giant, empty set with a blue backdrop and a guy holding a stick telling the actor where to look to 'interact' with the 'to be added later' point of interest.
Another example from 90s PC gaming is even better. Wing Commander 3 went full fmv for everything between missions. It too was filmed purely with a blue screen for the most part. For its sequel, Chris Roberts somehow found funding to build and film on actual sets and the difference is night and day. The actors, most of them the same from the previous game, are clearly more comfortable and interacted with the sets in a natural way that added a lot to their performances.

Good points about set production. Fast forward from the Star Wars prequels and The Hobbit films, and now some productions are moving away from green screen and replacing it with virtual backgrounds on giant LED screens.
They've come full circle - back to using rear projection in movies.
Maybe a couple of decades from now they'll start building sets again.
