You took an iconic DC character that has been repurposed by right wingers, g*mers, and 4chan, and you decided you need to own the chuds, so you make a movie about him where he's not a criminal mastermind who wants to watch the world burn, but a mentally ill loser who starts an "eat the rich" uprising. You released it, but instead of the media lapping it up, they took it the exact opposite way and started calling it a love letter to the alt-right before it even released. Theaters beefed their security. The FBI had to be briefed on Joker memes. This only bolstered their support and the movie went on to break over a billion dollars at the box office - one of the most profitable movies ever made. Arthur Fleck is now an immortal, iconic name. You were pissed. Pissed. The first man in history to be pissed off that his movie made a billion dollars.
So, frick it. If they like their little chuddy Joker, you'll tear it down. You make it a musical with shitty songs. You hire Lady Gaga. You turn Arthur into even more of a pathetic loser. You even have him getting the literal Joker r*ped out of him in prison. And finally, to rub salt in the wounds, you kill him off in the wimpiest way possible. You're sacrificing profit, your reputation, and potentially any chance of ever directing a big budget blockbuster ever again, but you're doing it to own the chuds.
