Payback:marseytrollgun:(1999) - was a good movie :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

I watched the directors cut and loved it. Peak fricking 90s movie with great action and a compelling story. Mel Gibson at his best, Lucy Lui at her begining and William DuVayne in his most memorable role besides his gold commercials. It also has the cop from Menace 2 Society.

The pacing and style are like a methed up and coloueized noir film

theatrical cut is unironically superior, Gibson took the project away from the director because he didn't know what he was doing and made it a better movie. Gibson is a better director and understands story structure better than brian hegland could ever dream of. People have been brainwashed to think "directors cut" automatically means better film and while that's true in some cases (like batman v superman) its not true in every case. Payback theatrical cut is the better movie. Fact.

is this true? which should I watch?

I've been long arguing that there needs to be a balance between studio meddling and complete free reign of artists, most of them need good tard wranglers (producers) to slap some sense into them when they start to experiment or self indulge too much. See Joker, or Ridley Scott's, Coppola's or Scorsese's latest movies.

but then you have these new age executive producers like hisrich ruining entire shows like the wittcher and rop wot etc

The Director's Cut version features a female Bronson, that is never seen only heard over the phone voiced by Sally Kellerman, does not include the voice-over by Porter and several Bronson-related scenes, and has a different film score composed by Scott Stambler. The film also features alternative color grading, and does not utilize the bleach bypass process present in the theatrical cut

I've only seen the theatrical, but from reading the spoilers below, the changes to the director's cut seem to make a worse movie.

Either way, it is a must watch film.
