Thoughts on the Terrifier films?

What do people think? Generic slop? Well-crafted gorefest? I've seen the first one and am half way through the second.

@KatserKitty1987 (RIP) said in an old thread:

The first one was overly long and exceedingly tiring. The sets were all lit like a play and the gore is a level or extreme to where it wraps around to not being distributing. It's a shame as the killer is actually pretty cool and interesting it's just that nothing else is.

I think the clown is cool, I like his mischievous smile. The women he kills are always pretty 1D and I'm sad when I see their boobs because I want to see them but not covered in blood while they're screaming.

Humanity has a baseline need to see gore, in the early internet it was everywhere but real. As it gets censored and becomes more fringe terrifier has retapped into the market

Liked the first two a lot. Haven't seen the third.

The first film is basically fricking porn. The sets are awful, the directing is bad, the acting is awful, the pacing is nonsensical, and the story is absent. Yes the gore effects are nice and Art is cool but it's hard for me to unless the movie is actually interesting or looks aesthetic which the first one didn't. Go watch an older gore fest like cannibal holocaust and you have a movie which has really good direction, interesting themes, and decent acting so you are actually immersed when the gore happens.

Never saw 2 or 3 because 1 was so fricking abysmal.

The first one was just gore for the sake of it. Like that was the entire movie, an evil clown killing people in horrific ways.

The second was a lot better. It was like an actual horror movie with a plot.

Haven't watched the third yet but have it downloaded.

"Busty teen goes to slutty Halloween party" is one of my favourite plots.

I've seen all three and the original short films. They are transgressive in a way that makes me happy. Damien Leone is a brilliant practical effects man, pretty good director and an okay writer. I am completely desensitized and innoculated against gore because of too young browsing of efukt, bestgore, etc. so i dont find them disgusting or horrifying at all. I watched all three with a big smile on my face.

Terrifier 2016:

In my opinion, the best. 85 min runtime, $35,000 budget, bad acting and just great. Damien directed, wrote, did the effects, did the editing and probably did a lot of other shit. There was 10 people that worked on this. Very funny, very indie, great gore fx setpeices, minimal story, 0 lore. This is Art the clown just clowning around for the entire movie.

Terrifier 2 2022:

138 min runtime. Wtf. What the frick. This movie should be 100 min. This is the first actual movie in the series with profesional color grading, a cast that can act in any passable way, and enough money ($250,000) to make this feel like a movie with studio backing (even though it isnt and is still indie).

Damien listened to criticism of the first movie and tried to write an actual story and create characters that are more fleshed out. I actually like the main family and think that the characterization and dialouge, if not realistic, is at least not super clichéd. People in this movie that are mean or airheaded or horny still have reactions to things going on around them in a semi grounded way. Horror characters are often so intentionally unlikable that you root for them to die. I think studios do this to make their deaths more palatable to a wide audience. No one in this movie is written that way.

I dont like the demon girl, i dont like the runtime, the clown cafe is way too long but this has the best over the top gore scene i have ever seen. Damien has said that the bedroom scene had just started filming when the covid lockdowns started so he went back to his workshop at home and spent 3 months retooling that scene and all of his props. Completely worth it.

Terrifier 3 2024:

A middleground in terms of Art to story ratio. $2mil, 125 min runtime, basically same level of production and quality as the last one. Damien has said that with the money they were able to massively increase the speed of production since he could hire people to help him with the effects. 6 years for terrifier 2, 2 years for terrifier 3.

They ditched the demon girl (good) for the woman that survived the first movie who is now evil. I could not give less of a shit about the lore, who is possesing who, or why sienna is chosen by god to fight art.

Lots of fun in this movie. I like the Christmas theme. I like the child death (most movies are too kitty to kill kids).

Overall 1>3>2 but all of them are good fun.

The first one had some of the worst acting I've ever seen by literally everyone who wasn't the clown. :marseydisagree: But the rest of the movie was pretty enjoyable. :marseypopcorntime: I haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd. :marseyshrug:
