learning on the contributions of Black Canadians to history

Wouldn't this just be Canadian history? Why weren't they already teaching anything about the 6 black people that have lived there? :marseyconfused2:

It's funny because my kid in grade 6 told me yesterday that:

"The only thing we learn about history is that white people were mean to black people."

I was in elementary about 15 years ago and the was more or less my experience too. I remember we watched Martin Luther king's “I have a dream” speech, and had a brief class about the civil rights movement that wrapped up with a generic racism is bad message. After that we never touched on it again in either elementary or high school.

I think this is a really good step in the right direction. Black and African-Canadians and their communities have always been a part of Canadian history. To omit it imo brings shame to our education system. We shouldn't be fighting over who's history we should teach, it really doesn't have to be a competition. We should be fighting to teach our country's full and accurate history to our youth.

How do you read that comment and think it's a step in the right direction?

Kind of telling that all the black history events everyone in the comments is talking about are American history and not Canadian
