Yeah they passed a thing saying online news has to pay canadian journoids a fee or smth or cease operating, so lots ceased operating. It was under the guise of "stopping foreign misinformation" but it's just a shakedown.
They're trying to do it to streaming services next
Basically Canada passed a law that says Facebook has to pay <insert news org here> every time they link to that news org's website/articles. Facebook (correctly imo) pointed out how ridiculous this is and decided to comply with the law by simply not linking to them. You can still browse directly to the news org's websites and read their articles unimpeded, although those same news orgs discovered that a huge portion of their traffic was driven by social media, so they all suffered a heck of a lot more for it than Facebook.
Yeah Australia did this in 2021 as well. Facebook did the same thing and started deleting / blocking pages which caused a lot of drama, all sorts of pages including local football clubs with 500 followers were getting Zucc'd.
The funniest thing too is that the Canuck government's response was to basically blame Meta for the potential deaths of Canadians that could not get warnings about wild fires on Facebook or something because of the news ban.
So they just doubled down on their nonsense of meta creating a public safety hazard instead of just admitting it was a shakedown for cash to subsidize journos.
It's just for social media afaik. You can go to foreign sites, youtube isnt affected and neither is reddit. I haven't seen any impact on my daily life cos i have no social media, but facebook boomers are in shambles
Oh they're still going forward with the MCU? Honestly I always found it kind of odd how they only really seemed to have like two arcs ever, Thanos and Galactus, and I always thought they both looked r-slurred as frick. Why can't they just make some new superheroes or something?
Yeah Trudeau passed some law saying that social media companies have to pay journo outlets if their stories are shared on their platforms or something so Zuck just blacklisted their news sources from being able to be posted in Canada lmao.
Several years ago, US news agencies complained about Google News and were asking to be compensated. Google responded by completely delisting the complainers from search. Suddenly they no longer thought they were being screwed over.
California was proposing a measure similar to Canada's as well and Meta pretty much said they would do the exact same thing in California as they did in Canada with blocking news.
Yeah this was such a stupid law. Our local news shut down after this was implemented and blamed it on the fact that their site traffic plummeted because of it. It was a pathetic attempt at a cash grab because none of these social media sites were ever going to opt to pay the fees rather than just block Canadian news.
We would like to acknowledge that this hole is established on the traditional and vibrantly coloured land of Don Cherry. We recognize the many years of service and garishly coloured joy he has brought us here on Turtle Island. May we continue to celebrate the spirit of Don Cherry's land with respect and appreciation.
