The old stock jeets were all brahmin and were restaurant owners, doctors, lawyers, pharmacists etc. That's the ideal.
The new wave is all poor punjabis who were conned by immigration ads sponsored by the leaf government. They got swindled out of their family's life savings by "immigration consultants" and promised outrageous wages. The idea was to either support their family back home or bring them over. These people no joke thought they would have steak & lobster every night in a high rise condo with a Cayenne in the garage.
They are all students because it used to mean a quick path to residency. The degree is just cost of entry to Canada, they dont expect to work in their field. Now that they are finally (maybe) closing that loophole there is no end game for them

The paradox of immigration. Doctors, lawyers, and restaurants owners (good ones) can have comfortable lives in their origin countries and will not risk moving to a developed one unless they're guaranteed to make more money and have legal safeguards. Poor immigrants on the other hand have nothing to lose, it is simply 100 times better to be poor in Canada than in India and at least it could give your kids a chance.

Because of mass migration rents are up over 100% even in backwaters, landlords are asking for extortionate deposits, car market is fricked, home ownership almost a pipe dream and a full time job with benefits incredibly hard to come by.
