And then when they finally have a moment in a spot that isn't killing them, of course they're gonna light up or shoot up. And then when this brief respite is threatened, they are hostile.
It really isn't about deserving. It's about limited resources. You or them. It's not personal. And you can say you deserve it more than them because you're smarter or richer or whatever but really it's just we are biased towards ourselves. And that's okay.

That's the point. Of course they are self-interested (the junkies themselves) but they haven't earned this, instead acting as parasites on their fellow human beings.
The enablers "self"-interest is more of a virtue signal, "look at how magnanimous I am, I can come to the defense even of the worst scum humanity has to offer, witness me"
