I think all the sci-fi books nerds obsess over (like Starship troopers, Dune, etc...) are boring. It's much better to just read their plot synopsis on wikipedia and the lore shit on wiki articles:marsey57:

I liked the Foundation books by Asimov :marseynerd2: I haven't read any sci-fi in forever though, I stopped caring about it after high school for some reason.

I stopped for ages and got back into it after reading Slaughterhouse 5. Lots of the prose is dire but each book has at least one neat idea.

Very dry prose for the most part. I've never read Vonnegut other than Harrison Bergeron but maybe I should look more into him, I get what OP means about just reading the synopsis since like you said they usually have a neat idea in them but may not be worth reading the full book. Maybe short stories are the better format to suit the autism of the average sci-fi writer.

Def. Short stories are the best part of the genre.

God Bless You Mr. Rosewater and Slaughterhouse 5 are very good, he's a fantastic writer.

Sheckley is worth reading, but only 1 book. Pick one.

Rendezvous with Rama is probably the best golden age sci fi novel imo.

Asimov's short stories are great.

The sprawl trilogy and Burning Chrome are my favs, tho. Gibson used to be so good
