I think a lot of sci-fi books would be better off if the authors considered world building to be something that's supposed to supplement story and themes instead of taking up bulk of the focus.
You are correct. I want to write a sci-fi book about religion (Jesus has appeared on every alien planet) but I plan to spend exactly 0% of it world building and instead talking about the implications.
I like weird religious stories, but it's a tricky niche because Christoids rarely want to be challenged, and atheists can't look past the sky daddy representation
