From Dante to Tolstoy to Dan Brown, it seems like self inserts are and old technique with very different results depending of the author.

Thats like asking "uuuh is Don Quixote a good book guys?" or "Is the bible even worth reading?". Its just a stupid question to ask.

Don Quixote is a good book, but if someone asked me I would tell them it's hard to read. I found it worthwhile, but some people might not.

Inferno is very good. Haven’t read Purgatorio and Paradiso yet.

By the way, as you are brazilian, I recommend you to get a bilingual portuguese/toscan edition. Portuguese and Italian share many similarities, and although medieval Toscan is not modern Italian, it is quite interesting to compare it with the original text, and much easier for those who speak Romance languages to get it faster.
