From Goethe to Kafka, there have been many renowned German Language authors. From the 1800s onwards german literature flourished, acquiring worldwide notoriety.

I haven’t read german authors so I’ll just follow the recommendations and :marseypopcorn:.

Question for Deustchlandcels :marseyflaggermany:, how translatable is Goethe? Is he like Shakespeare and Cervantes? I wish I knew german like my granny :#marseysad:

German is like 50% the same as english so it translates better than most things.

I think is more like 30% at best. But I guess a good English translation with footnotes should be fine.

The only reason english speakers struggle to understand it is because German has different cases and a stricter sentence structure. The more educated english speakers who know a bit of Elizabethan English can read a German newspaper and get the jist of the article, I've seen it happen.

I don’t think is just grammar structure and the case system, there is a lot of different vocabulary as well. English has tons of loan words of French origin, like “hospital” instead of “krankenhaus”. And even words in english that are not loan words are different, like “driving” vs “fahren” or “understand” vs “verstehen”. But now that you mentioned Elizabethean English, things like “hast thou” and “hast du” are indeed similar.
