It’s just not the movie that could be done well I don’t think. Even if it wasn’t atrociously bad I doubt it would have translated well

They left out most anything that would be difficult or controversial to film, and just sorta tried to do what they could with what was left. It was probably a fool's errand to even try filming a book that's about 60% internal monologue and 25% traumatizing children.
