Choose how I kick off winter reading this weekend

I have a decent backlog of things that don't particularly interest me should be read so you can look down on people who haven't read them and scoff at how they aren't even familiar with the classics. It's time to start ticking more off of that list and none of them sound particularly enjoyable, so I'm crowdsourcing this to !bookworms and other homosexuals.

What first? This is by no means an exhaustive list but I've narrowed it down to what seems least unappealing.

Les Mis is not a thing you burger headed cute twink, it's Les Misérables.

With that being said, you can't go wrong with a french author. Both Les Misérables and Le Comte de Monte-Cristo are good but there are tons of other books by the same authors which are great too and nobody talks about in the anglosphere.

From Victor Hugo, you can read Claude Gueux, which is a short story about two gay lovers in Prison. Very easy to read and moving.

Germinal from Zola, it's pretty much everyone's introduction to Zola in France and his most famous novel, it's a great story about love and work in the mines in the 19th century.

Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, is really good too, about a woman in the 19th century who pretends to be rich but is destitute.

All three of these are realists, with strong characters and vivid descriptions of the life of commoners at that time, they're the kind of books you remember for the rest of your life.

Something else entirely, if you're looking for something a bit more light, I've been recommending the Judge Dee novels to everyone, they're fricking great. It's about a chinese detective solving murders in the 7th century, if you read it start with The Chinese Gold Murders.
