What is it with russian and chinese literature and there being 4000 names you can't remember?

For Russian novels it's because they were originally published piecemeal in periodicals rather than as cohesive units. Also they were paid by the word so lots of padding.

Why is it that for some reason a lot of 'great' literature turns out to be newspaper 'slop made to bang out a quick buck?
