Post Anglo-Boer war, from 1899-1905, the entire Free State and Transvaal was depopulated by scorched earth tactics by the Bongs to hem in the Boer commandos who acted as guerilla fighters. This included burning crops, destroying towns and buildings and capturing children and women into concentartion camps.

This devasation was so complete that it took 5-10 years for the boers, even after released from Bong concentration camps ,to even gather supplies to frick off back to their farms which were located far from cities and habitation, and all their lands had been devastated

This created a very unique moment in the history of SA, especially the interior of the country in places like Free State, where there would basically be near zero human populations for at least half a decade, and thus no human activity to scare off baboons. Baboons are an extreme pestilence and boers farmers would kill them more aggressively than even foxes, all SA black despise them for their intelligence because they can infiltrate any box or secured tent, and make off with poor xhosas food and supplies.

In that unique moment of 1899-1905, the Baboons were becoming tamer and less frightened by human contact, and Eugene marais, one of the most famous Naturalists in SA history would write about his extraordinary intercation with baboons, and basically write ultra Thesis level diaries about his observations about baboon tribal and familial behaviour. His diaries are considered some of the most comprehensive written about nature, and are prime examples studied by Biology students, in how nature should be properly examined

His books Soul of the Ant, and Soul of the Ape are also extremely engagingly written, even for people with no interest in animals or scientifical type shit

Early 20th century book about baboons in the context of the Boer Wars, extremely niche and neurodivergent choice, looks very interesting. The Transvaal Republic and the Free State of Orange only had a population of a few hundred thousands right? Throwing most of them in concentration camps must have been quite apocalyptic.

His book Die Siel van die Mier (The Soul of the Ant, but usually given in English as the Soul of the White Ant) was plagiarised by Nobel laureate Maurice Maeterlinck, who published La Vie des Termites (translated into English as The Life of Termites or The Life of White Ants), an entomological book,[6] in what has been called "a classic example of academic plagiarism" by University of London's professor of biology, David Bignell.[7]

Eurocuck plagiarizing the work of a proud African man. :marseydisagree:
