Opted for the paperback myself which I don't do but it seemed more fitting for the material and I don't regret it. These are extremely high quality paperbacks with very nice heavy duty glossy pages, well-bound and with beautiful illustrations. Haven't checked the others yet but the first one has a really illuminating 20-page preface by Watterson explaining his life and how he ended up doing C&H and early, unpublished works and also pictures of his cat.
!bookworms you are LITERALLY LOSING MONEY by not picking this up

Apparently that drawing of Calvin isn't Watterson's, and he doesn't like it.

The preface alone is so interesting and Watterson's fanatically antisocial nature make it such a treat to get all that from him
But besides that you get a gorgeous box set of every C&H that will ever exist

He edited a strip about Calvin asking his mom if he's adopted to being about being a test tube baby because later on he adopted a kid irl. Literally unreadable
I got all these from the Scholastic catalog at school and lost them all (not my pic)

In the preface he talks about how he moved out west to bumfrick nowhere and changed all his contact info and stuff because people seeing his work and recognizing him unnerved him and he liked to imagine he was just doing the strip to entertain his wife

He won at life. Do exactly what he wants professionally for a few years, make his artistic statement, get filthy rich, frick off out of the spotlight, syndication neetbux roll in and do whatever, whenever. All well earned honestly

Honestly these books are the entire serialization like twice over. A bunch of stuff got reprinted in different aspect ratios and color/b&w. Bottom right is the book version of an exhibition that they did with some of his commentary

Im still genuinely suprised that america never had a disney comic book series, like you guys had Duck Tales but in most of europe we have the comic books, where every edition is several stories, usually short and sweet disconnected ones, sometimes episodic, but with usually the same themes
the most unique out of the italian ones is by far "Paperinik", where donald duck is effectively Batman but poor and unlucky, and his gadgets are made by Archimede Pitagorico (the itlian name for Gyro Gearloose, which is an infinitely worse name), theres even several long episodic stories of many kinds, involving anything from leagues of superheroes and villains, all played by other classic characters, or interesting sci-fi ones that get more serious, it's good shit

Darn nice, I think i got my hardcover set when it was on sale a couple years ago.
Does any comic or book have a persistent legacy like C&H, without it also being sold as Disneyesque goyslop ( via movies, tv shows, trinkets in stores...); IDK if I can think of any tbh

Man, Bill Watterson is such an absolute chad.
He made what is probably the best comic strip of all time, quit after 10 years when he felt he'd done everything he wanted and just fricked off. Never jumped the shark, never sold out, just stubbornly insisted on his artistic vision and integrity above all other considerations. Bonus chad points for just ignoring journos pestering him.

I would buy this, but I still have probably all of them, or at least most of them, from my childhood.
This was definitely my favorite print comic though. And my old optometrist used to have a bunch in his office so I'd sometimes show up a bit early and just read them for half an hour lmao.
