Henry James. He's so dry it's physically painful. It's actually amazing how much better the film 'The Heiress' is than his short story 'Washington Square,' purely because the film sticks to his story, but doesn't suffer from his actual writing. You've never seen an author get bested by Hollywood so completely.
And yes, I also read Daisy Miller. And yes, it was also painful.
