Most disappointing book relative to expectations?

What's the worst book you've ever read, discounting self published crap?

I bought my mom Jo Watson's Among Others half a decade ago for mother's day.

I didn't know much about the industry :marseydunce: so I thought that it winning the Hugo meant it had to be at least of decent quality. It was so bad that she said it had to read it too :marseyxd:

300 pages of the most pretentious precious child crap :marseyxd:

All of dan brown books. I was hoodwinked :marseyhoodwink: into reading them by my gay friends. I kinda liked digital fortress and angels &demons but that is

Who thinks Dan Brown's books are "good"? It's not the end of the world if you enjoy reading them, but I thought the consensus was very much in the "These are mass-market trash".

Dan Brown was my guilty pleasure, I found his slop so entertaining. Angel & Demons had that hilarious moment with the Swiss Guard shooting the old fedora cripple everyone thought was evil plus other silly stuff like CERN using an x33 and making antimatter bombs.

!ifrickinglovescience we should discuss Dan Brown more, there's also the noetic โ€œscienceโ€ of The Lost Symbol

Darn his books were fricking dumb but the best slop. And the chapters were short so you felt smort for reading so fast!

Angels & Demons had so much bad science, bad history, bad geography, bad linguistics sometimes all in one, I don't know he does it.

I remember when they tell Langdon about โ€œthe Catholic theory of Big Bangโ€ and he's like :marseymindblown: wtf? And they tell him about Lemaรฎtre and how the Big Bang Theory was shunned by atheists because it meant time had a beginning and therefore God.

All of his books have bad science, etc. If you know anything at all about the subject that he's talking about, you realize that he's talking out of his butt. The worst in my opinion was the Malthusian crap in one of his more recent ones, since lots of people actually believe that and it's actually led to stupid policies in the real world (Malthusian stuff, not the book specifically)

Oh yeah, we're supposed to sympathize with the villain in Inferno for sterilizing half of the global population because โ€œthe renaissance came after the black plague imagine our future after this!โ€ :marseywholesome:

I think a lot of the Catholic stuff went over my head, I was just trucking through. In fact I don't remember the plot except a helicopter and an explosion

The Camarlengo takes the antimatter bomb and flies away with the chopper right over St Peter's square. He then parachutes before the antimatter annihilation

He recycles the same stuff. On his book Origins his Mary Sue Professor Robert Langdon goes to a museum in Europe where there's a dead guy (a tech billionaire) and the catholic church is involved and there's an AI and the main girl was close to the dead guy.
