Most disappointing book relative to expectations?

What's the worst book you've ever read, discounting self published crap?

I bought my mom Jo Watson's Among Others half a decade ago for mother's day.

I didn't know much about the industry :marseydunce: so I thought that it winning the Hugo meant it had to be at least of decent quality. It was so bad that she said it had to read it too :marseyxd:

300 pages of the most pretentious precious child crap :marseyxd:

Thank god somebody else said House of Leaves. Boring, obnoxious to read, not scary.

Alastair Reynolds is very hit or miss. Pushing Ice was probably my favorite space opera novel ever. I still have no idea why he's rated so highly.

Pushing ice is terrible and you should feel terrible. Agree with below poster: first half is perfect sci-fi. Everything after that is so so so bad

His second book was good, but after that he lost his touch (at least what I was able to read, I give up on bad books. Never good for my mental health).

I loved the first half of pushing ice, but i started losing interest once they landed on the alien object. The unending rivalry between those two woman leaders got really boring

The rivalry was the worst and the ending was incredibly boring; I think it was 500 pages. If it had ended on the second last chapter, I would have given it a perfect 10/10.

I hate his space cop crap/every revelation space book besides the first one, but I actually like his standalone/short stuff quite a bit
