What's the worst book you've ever read, discounting self published crap?
I bought my mom Jo Watson's Among Others half a decade ago for mother's day.
I didn't know much about the industry so I thought that it winning the Hugo meant it had to be at least of decent quality. It was so bad that she said it had to read it too
300 pages of the most pretentious precious child crap

"malazan book of the fallen" series. As in, it started pretty strong for like two books, then started gradually losing the plot, by the fifth book one of the two authors left and it took an even sharper nosedive, the last few books were completely r-slurred.

2 books and a few chapters of the third one is as far as i could make it. i've wanted to like fantasy and people talked about this crap like it's inspired but it just felt muddled. the world building, the plot, the gay magic system. it all felt muddled and like the authors didn't quite know what to do with any of it. i thought shadowthrone and cotillion were kind of cool though

Yep, they had a bunch of cool ideas that they slapped together and then kinda got confused and floundering.
Tbh they had a huge problem right from the start: they very obviously wanted to do the Chronicles of the Black Company (which by the way I thoroughly recommend) but turned to 11. The problem is that the Black Company started as pretty ordinary and had to overcome various obstacles and grow badass. While the Malazan company started already maximally badass, so there was nothing much for them to do.
