To me Jung and Joseph Campbell and to a lesser extent Propp and the other folklorists/mythology classifiers have always seemed to engage in a lot of pseud equivocation that both strips the joy out of exploring the differences and novelties of individual works while also conveniently ignoring anything that would contradict their theories, like how in e.g. :marseychingchong: culture dragons are benevolent and bring good fortune or in some of the Greek regions/traditions snakes are healers.

Maybe I'm the :marseysmoothbrain: though. Either way wash your balls.

I know close to nothing about Jung's oeuvre, wasn't he a shrink at the same time as that crackpot Freud?

Fun fact: Carl Jung had close ties to the CIA. He also probably had s*x with Allen Dulles' wife but Allen was fine with it because he had his own mistress (and weirdly enough, Allen's wife was close friends with the mistress after learning about her)

Then they moved from Mount Hor, following the road that goes to the Red Sea, in order to get around Edom. The people became impatient on the trip and criticized Elohim and Moses. They said, "Why did you make us leave Egypt—just to let us die in the desert? There's no bread or water, and we can't stand this awful food!"

So Yahweh sent poisonous snakes among the people. They bit the people, and many of the Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we criticized Yahweh and you. Pray to Yahweh so that he will take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people.

Yahweh said to Moses, "Make a snake, and put it on a pole. Anyone who is bitten can look at it and live." So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. People looked at the bronze snake after they were bitten, and they lived.

Hezekiah got rid of the illegal places of worship, crushed the sacred stones, and cut down the poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah. He even crushed the bronze snake that Moses had made because up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. They called it Nehushtan. Hezekiah trusted Yahweh Elohim of Israel. No king among all the kings of Judah was like Hezekiah.

Reported by:

I chose the Names of God (BIPOC) version on purpose, it is the most dramapilled Bible translation since it correctly shows the original Hebrew names for YHWH, and also because of its acronym! :marseytroublemaker: !christians !catholics

The Names of God Bible (BIPOC) accurately translates the meaning of the original texts into clear, everyday language. While most translations obscure the names and titles of God by replacing them with just a few English words such as God, Lord, or LORD, The Names of God Bible restores the transliterations of ancient names—such as Yahweh, El Shadday, El Elyon, and Adonay—to help the reader better understand the rich meaning of God's names that are found in the original Hebrew and Aramaic text.

One of the best ways to get to know God on a deeper level is to know his names and titles as they are revealed in Scripture. If you are interested in more information about the meaning of the names of God, the print edition of The Names of God Bible includes commentary by bestselling author Ann Spangler, sharing background information, key Scripture passages, devotional readings, and Bible promises connected to each name.

The Rod of Asclepius is still a popular symbol for medical associations today and the original Hippocratic Oath invoked him.

When Hadrian rebuilt Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina following the Jewish-Roman War they even turned the sacred pool (identified in the Christian tradition as having healing properties due to the presence of St. Raphael the Archangel whose name translates roughly as "God's healer") featured in John 5 into a cultic worship site for Asclepius. :marseysatanworship2: Such blasphemous disrespect in turn continued to simmer in the buildup to the Bar Kokhba revolt.

or in some of the Greek :marsey300: regions/traditions snakes :marseymedusa: are healers.

This is true in the Old Testament as well. Staff :marseysunwukong2: of Moses but more particular to healing are the bronze serpents that healed the Israelites

Jump in the discussion.

Not to nitpick but :marseyakshually: Moses' Staff was a response to the snakes plaguing the Israelites in the preceding verse Numbers 21:6 and was thus more about protection from them rather than healing through them and later King Hezekiah destroyed the Nehushtan because there was sacrifice taking place at its site. Snakes :marseythreecodecelscucking: don't heal, only God does

Sure but gods healing was done through a bronze serpent.

My point :marseytedsimp2: being is that snakes :marseytwodramacodecelsmating: have not been seen just as agents of suffering :marseypain: but also healing even within our own religion. It is not just isolated pagan symbolism. Even Greek :marseymedusa: mythology :marseymedusa: prominently featured snakes :marseydrsneks: as evil as well. You had many evil snake :marseydrsneks: monsters :marseysully: even in Greek :marseymedusa: mythology :marseymedusa: most prominently medusa.

In fact now that I think :marseyquestion: about it Medusa was a priest :marseyorthodoxsmug: (for Artemis I think) who turned away from her god and had relations with Poseidon. As you know in Jewish/christian traditions the snake :marseysnek: itself turns mankind away from god but somewhat similar :marseypamsame: situation/theme
