Modern literary fiction is the most curated thing ever. They don't care about sales they only care about the right type of people getting critical acclaim and awards in one of the so called high arts.
One of the few fiction genres men actually read more or equally to women (men are still ordering classics online and reading Russian lit) but modern literary fiction publishers are all women who spitefully curate the genre to have nothing appealing to men.
There is basically no millennial straight white male writer of note, and they have been intentionally shut out.
It is marketed now by the authors identity first and foremost and modern lit sucks because of it.
It's a system set up by white women for themselves pretty much and the token minorities who can only write novels about racism.

Dudes still rock in horror and crime fiction, though I think most of them are gen-x or older.

Yea for sure they can break through in genre fiction still.
A lot of talented male writers are straight up told by agents to switch to genre if they want to get published.
Editors and agents in the literary fiction scene more or less advertise white males need not apply.
They are terrified of another David Foster Wallace type who gets a ton of praise and a cult following outshining their current crop.

that makes so much sense. I was thinking women just had the demographic advantage because the level of class privilege where men don't need a remunerative career is much higher than the level where women don't need one, but if that were the whole story you'd still see some break through and draw in new audiences. it's that they can't market male writers to their traditional audience and are scared of the politics of deliberately courting a disruption to the ecosystem.

They could market male writers pretty easily but they deliberately choose not to. They have only one literary celebrity millennial because of this approach more or less but they aren't doing it to make money. Women mostly read books for teenagers and romance not literary fiction.
It isn't about money it is about them wanting the so called modern great artists to be a black trans women.
Publishing is one of the least diverse fields I read and article that says the field is close to 90 percent white women. It's all rich liberal women with family money they can live on while living in NYC while making terrible entry level wages for 12 years.
Fantasy and Sci Fi writers getting big doesn't worry then they don't win big literary awards or get labeled creative geniuses.
Plus in literary fiction to be successful you need that NPR interview, and reviews and stuff that no straight white masculine guy will ever get.
Sci Fi writers don't need a big publishing house behind them they can get well known through internet forums with small publishers.
