No, I used a pen tablet. But this "guide" is trash and ancient. I wouldn't follow it unless you have absolutely no idea how to use an art software and wants to freehand draw Marseys.

It's kinda clunky because I use a mouse and a keyboard, hard to get lines right, and i havent ever drawn before making marseys, got any cheap pen tablet recs?

I gave up* on drawing now but I started with making Marseys too, but even with a tablet it's still a good idea to use tools like the bezier curve or stabilizer, preferably using vectors to edit the line. I suck at using vectors though.
I only used 2 tablets, started with a Huion HS64, a cheap chinky tablet, but it felt too small for my gorilla hands. I replaced it with a RTP-700, a larger and newer model. Both work really well though, I can't blame them for my shitty drawings.
If you want cheap then the HS64 is probably what you're looking for, though there might be newer or better cheap models. Might be worth investing into a larger tablet if you can't comfortably move your arms with the small ones, but you should also consider how much space you go to work it.

I haven't used photoshop since the 2000's, I know most professional artstrags use it nowadays though.
And you did a great job with those Marseys, I don't get the references but still..

I might still make some Marsey, but nothing too complex.
One last thing: It might be worth looking at this list for pen tablet recommendations.

i use mouse and keyboard + photoshop, when drawing you have to use smoothing, it makes drawing much easier once you get used to it.
