Later, the UM student voter contacted the local clerk's office, asking if he could somehow get his ballot back, according to Benson's office.

"We're grateful for the swift action of the clerk in this case, who took the appropriate steps and referred the case to law enforcement," said a joint statement from the offices of Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit. "We are also grateful to law enforcement for swiftly and thoroughly investigating this case.

Anyone who attempts to vote illegally faces significant consequences, including but not limited to arrest and prosecution."

Benson and Savit are both Democrats.

The person is being charged with perjury — making a false statement on an affidavit for the purpose of securing voter registration — and being an unauthorized elector who attempted to vote. The latter allegation is a felony punishable by up to four years behind bars and a fine of up to $2,000, according to Michigan law. The standard penalty for perjury in Michigan is 15 years in prison

"Let this much be clear: Voting records are public," the statement added. "Any noncitizen who attempts to vote fraudulently in Michigan will be exposing themselves to great risk and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Voting records are public," the statement added.

So does the state retroactively crosscheck those with some national register, or is this utterly toothless?

Im normally not one to yurocuck-smugpost, which is usually about libshit policies as well, but unironically mutts should take a book from ( probably every) yuro country.

Where i live you get a "voting slip" in the mail ahead of time, a physical card that you have to present to the voting station. And you can only vote at your nearest location based on residency. When you get there your slip is voided and handed in (to prevent multiple votes) and your name cross-checked with their registry and your government ID (again ticked off on the list to additionally prevent double voting), and only then do you actually get a ballot.

Its kinda funny that republicans are the ones pushing for a system closer to that.

Step 1: Import non-citizens

Step 2: Have them illegal vote

Step 3: Win

Step 4: Throw them in jail, further securing union jobs for the Prison Industrial Complex

"Mr. President, I have an even better idea for the labor shortage and cutting federal costs. What if we imprison the immigrants and make them work back-breaking manual labor for free? Then, when we're done--this is the best part--we deport them!"
