He registered to vote on Sunday using his UM student identification and other documentation establishing residency in Ann Arbor, he signed a document identifying himself as a U.S. citizen and his ballot was entered into a tabulator, according to the Secretary of State's office.

...

The student's ballot is expected to count in the upcoming election — although it was illegally cast — because there is no way for election officials to retrieve it once it's been put through a tabulator, according to two sources familiar with Michigan election laws. The setup is meant to prevent ballots from being tracked back to an individual voter.

Lol. Lmao even. Who knew voter fraud was that easy? !chuds did

The entire thing is effectively an honor system. Apparently nobody in burgerland would ever dream of checking the "I am a citizen" box if they're actually not. Fraud is impossible.

Not all states are the same. According to Michigan's Secretary of State, xhe should't have been allowed to even register:

By law, voters in possession of a photo ID must present it at the polls.

A photo ID presented at a polling place does not need to have the voter's address on it. The name on the identification card can be a shorter form of the voter's full name. For example, "Bill" for "William" and "Kathy" for "Katherine" are acceptable.

Acceptable forms of photo ID include the following:

Driver's license or state ID card issued by Michigan or another state, Federal, state, county or local government-issued photo ID, U.S. passport, Military photo ID card, Student photo ID card from an educational institution, Tribal photo ID card, Local or county issued government ID, Concealed Pistol license, Voting at a polling place without a photo ID

If a voter does not have photo ID, or if they forgot to bring their photo ID with them, they can still cast a ballot simply by signing an affidavit stating the voter is not in possession of a valid photo ID. Once the affidavit is signed, they may cast a ballot, and it will be counted with all other ballots on Election Day.

You must show ID if this is your first time voting in Michigan, AND you registered to vote through the mail or a voter registration drive, AND You did not provide your Michigan driver's license number, Michigan state ID number, or Social Security number when you registered to vote.

There's 4 countries in which I can legally vote in and I only bother with the one I care about (America). Can't imagine wanting to get deported for that shit.

Later, the UM student voter contacted the local clerk's office, asking if he could somehow get his ballot back, according to Benson's office.

:#chudjakasian: :#marseyclueless:

"We're grateful for the swift action of the clerk in this case, who took the appropriate steps and referred the case to law enforcement," said a joint statement from the offices of Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit. "We are also grateful to law enforcement for swiftly and thoroughly investigating this case.

:#chudjakasian: :#marseyaware:

Anyone who attempts to vote illegally faces significant consequences, including but not limited to arrest and prosecution."

Benson and Savit are both Democrats.

The person is being charged with perjury — making a false statement on an affidavit for the purpose of securing voter registration — and being an unauthorized elector who attempted to vote. The latter allegation is a felony punishable by up to four years behind bars and a fine of up to $2,000, according to Michigan law. The standard penalty for perjury in Michigan is 15 years in prison

:#marseypibblechad:

"Let this much be clear: Voting records are public," the statement added. "Any noncitizen who attempts to vote fraudulently in Michigan will be exposing themselves to great risk and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

So does the state retroactively crosscheck those with some national register, or is this utterly toothless?

Im normally not one to yurocuck-smugpost, which is usually about libshit policies as well, but unironically mutts should take a book from ( probably every) yuro country.

Where i live you get a "voting slip" in the mail ahead of time, a physical card that you have to present to the voting station. And you can only vote at your nearest location based on residency. When you get there your slip is voided and handed in (to prevent multiple votes) and your name cross-checked with their registry and your government ID (again ticked off on the list to additionally prevent double voting), and only then do you actually get a ballot.

Its kinda funny that republicans are the ones pushing for a system closer to that.

Wild since almost all of Europe, Latin America, and Asia has federal voter IDs !latinx

Idk what Africa has

Realtalk, I think the big issue for a long time was that it's not a power reserved to the federal government to issue voting IDs or IDs in general and it falls to states along with counties implementing actual voting.

Voter-ID requirements are the norm in many countries, as Republicans are fond of pointing out. But so are national ID cards. In places such as France and Germany, citizens pick up their identity card when they turn 16 and present it once they're eligible to vote. Out of nearly 200 countries across the world, at least 170 have some form of national ID or are implementing one, according to the political scientist Magdalena Krajewska.

In the American psyche, however, a national ID card conjures images of an all-knowing government, its agents stopping people on the street and demanding to see their papers. Or at least that's what leaders of both parties believe. The idea is presumed to be so toxic that not a single member of Congress is currently carrying its banner. Even those advocates who like the concept in theory will discuss its political prospects only with a knowing chuckle, the kind that signals that the questioner is a bit crazy. 'There are only three problems with a national ID: Republicans hate it, Libertarians hate it, and Democrats hate it,' says Kathleen Unger, the founder of VoteRiders, an organization devoted to helping people obtain ID."

People would freak the frick out if they were told

to obtain their Citizen ID card
