H5N1 has a mortality rate of almost 50% for the elderly and young children. Given how 'well' the US 'handled' COVID, I would expect a full collapse of the US healthcare system within months if this virus picks up steam. Most hospitals in rural areas haven't even recovered from COVID.
FYI they already recieved funding foe this despite there already being several vaccines for bird flu.

I think the Spanish Flu might have jumped from birds to humans to pigs, but it could have jumped to humans from something else.
It's definitely possible, and the sensitivity to it is because it would be devastating if it happened. Low likelihood of occurrence, but high severity.

That is true, but if the right mutation happens then it could start going from human to human. They want to get a vaccine that can be adapted faster before that happens because bird flu is so deadly in humans.

Like that was the whole thing with covid. There have been similar viruses in animals for a long time, people probably caught it some times from these animals but didn't spread it because it didn't have the mutation, and then that all changed.
