You need to register for a party to vote in that party's primaries. It's common for dems in strong repub areas and repubs in strong dem areas to register for the opposite party to vote in their primary. Party registration obviously has zero impact on your actual voting - you do not need to vote for a candidate to register to their party, and you cannot be kicked out of a party for voting "wrong".
Here in Chicago, a strong blue area, republicans usually register as a democrat for primaries. This lets them vote in the contentious primary elections, since they know that the republican candidate has no chance in the general election.
I'd bet that's the case here. Anyone reading anything into "party registration" is an idiot. Unless it comes with at least a donation (in time or money), it's meaningless.
