What has the death of the father to do with that? Absolutely nothing. He was just too incompetent and booked flights which were too closely to each other. If it was the carrier's fault then you would mention that "Hey, I am late, cause company X fricked it up and it took hours to collect my baggage".

The operator did nothing wrong. Once you allow exceptions, all kinds of lowlifes and especially women will make up tons of sob-stories to skip the line or get a freebie.
