Reminds @Aswangactor0 of when the IRA was kneecapping drug dealers in Catholic neighborhoods in the 1980s-1990s claiming they were protecting the community. There were very persistent rumors that they were just driving out the dealers who were independent or from the INLA. @Aswangactor0 guess maybe it was a British psyop but @Aswangactor0 get the impression that nobody believed that.

Yeah, @Aswangactor0 can see how in a really fricked up situation you could say "at least we don't deal too kids" or something and the population might grudgingly accept that.
@Aswangactor0 stand with Israel which has used the "at least we're not those even worse guys" defense pretty effectively in the Arab world.

IIRC the IRA, like the Protestant militias, was never quite a unified, consistent organization; you had genuine statesmen and bright-eyed revolutionaries as well as common thugs, drug gangs and criminals all under the same roof.
