UAW is controlled by graduate students. Yes United Auto Workers has grad students as it's most powerful members. They sued the Union and got the courts to get rid of locals to make it one member = one vote because it's more "democratic". Grad students obviously vote a lot more than blue collar auto workers who used to exercise their power through representatives of their locals.

!commies !nooticers is this worker solidarity? Are grad students an important part of UAW?

Not a commie :marseydarkcomrade: but a lot of current "democracy" smells like one move to checkmate against wageslaves

Idk about the internal politics of the UAW, but in a general sense I don't see why the average citizens would be against unions.

Unions are constitutionally protected under freedom of association. Workers have a right to organize for better working conditions. That shouldn't be controversial.

Because they very openly try get union membership mandated while at the same time locking out new blood to artificially inflate their own wages.

Workers have a right to organize for better working conditions.

Shame those "better working conditions" usually end up being "Lets jack up the amount of required schooling, but grandfather in all current union members"

Or they don't freeze hiring they just negotiate for free healthcare for themselves while making new hires start at a pay scale that's like half what the existing pay scale is AND pay into the health fund

There are valid criticisms of union practices, but I just don't agree that that means we should scrap heap the idea of unions in general.

They always form cartels that hurt new labor and industry. Their entire goal is anti-competitive and they use laws to enforce it. They are part of political machines where they graft money from public contracts.

Most darning criticism of them is they often accumulate great amounts of capital but rarely use that to start a co-op where workers own the business. Why not?

I don't see how UAW workers could own car companies.

Similarly, I have family members that are FF/PD and involved in their unions. They just negotiate with state government on contracts, ownership isn't involved.

One of my siblings is actually union treasurer and makes sure all the money is being used responsibly..

Granted, when he took over the job, he found out that the books were shit and the money WAS NOT being used responsibly.

But it is now, and that's why they have elections and whatever...

It's not like some big mafia organization like the UAW and Teachers unions can be..

They're just local unions for city/state fire fighters.

You start a car coop. You build and sell cars and share ownership with the workers.

Freedom of association is not a constitutionally protected right. The Civil Rights Acts and then COVID completely destroyed it. It is only invoked to protect woke causes but can be ignored otherwise.

Are they auto workers or how are they members of UAW?

I like the German model of unions, where they're symbiotic with the company. They'll even vote themselves pay decreases after meeting with execs if it's determined that's what's needed for the company to remain competitive—because no company, no union job.

Co-ops are also a good model to give back the value of labor to employees while also giving them actual skin in the game
