If you've ever taken antidepressants you're basically screwed out of ever flying a plane. They should really tell you that before you ever see a psychiatrist.
If you've taken Bipolar meds then no. They don't like any psychiatric meds. Even ADHD meds require you to jump through a shit ton of hoops and the FAA can revoke your license at any time if they think you're relapsing or some shit. If you do decide to go for it I recommend applying to be a flight attendant and getting free flight lessons from pilots you "meet". The pilots also tend to know the AMEs that are just phoning it in and will sign off anyone's medical papers.
You have to be off for at least 90 days and then have a medical professional sign off saying you're good. THEN you have to go through an AME (Aviation Medical Examiner) and deal with whatever bullshit paperwork they require and get THEM to sign off that you're good. I recommend starting that process before seriously undertaking flight training just so you don't waste 10k. I recommend doing your Discovery Flight before all that though just to see if it's something you want to do. And, obviously, if you have to take meds to be healthy and sane then you should do that even if you can't fly because of it.
thank you for the explanation though it was actually interesting. i have a bit of a fear of heights- not a phobia per se, but the highest i'll comfortably go is climbing a tree
