Top 10 songs of 2013 review

So I saw a popular tweet about this image and figured I'd review the songs myself.

Thrift Shop - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (feat. Wanz)

Not nearly as bad as I remembered. The intro was dogshit but overall I think if the song never got extremely popular and overplayed it'd be fondly remembered.

6.8/10

Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams

Starts off decent but after about a minute in you're waiting for the end. Then you realize it's 4:23 long.

3.4/10

Radioactive - Imagine Dragons

So horrifically overplayed that despite not having heard it in years I was sick of it after a good 20 seconds. People say this was "when Imagine Dragons was good" but this is pretty mediocre. Although I can see why people like it.

4.5/10

Harlem Shake - Baauer

An overall miserable listening experience.

1.2/10

Can't Hold Us - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton

A great song that still holds up today. It being beaten by Thrift Shop is criminal. The 4 minute run time flew by.

8.7/10

Mirrors - Justin Timberlake

I'm using the 4:37 radio edit and not the 8+ minute song because I'm not a masochist. Any energy I had from the last song was completely shattered (get it?) from this obnoxious whiny bullshit pop.

Surely the rest of the songs on this list won't be just as obnoxious :marseyclueless:

1.7/10

Just Give Me a Reason - Pink featuring Nate Reuss

Somehow the moid's voice is more obnoxious than Pink's.

Not as bad as I remembered. Still terrible. Hey, at least it's not Mirrors.

3.4/10

Cruise - Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly

Oh God I didn't recognize this song from the name. Imagine my surprise when it started playing. This unironically might be the worst song ever.

It's almost so bad it wraps around to being ironically good. Almost.

0.0/10

Roar - Katy Perry

Very generic and bland, but she does have her tits halfway out in the music video. So there's that.

2.8/10

Final Thoughts

Overall most of these songs are remembered poorly because they were so overplayed. While pretty bad on average, I don't think 2013 was much worse for pop music than any other year. My reviews towards the end might be a little low because my tolerance for mediocre music was rapidly dropping. But oh well.

If there's a better version of a song on this list that would change my review, please don't tell me. I don't care.

Comment any songs/albums/discographies you'd like me to review. I might do a Taylor Swift discography review if you guys are interested.

Edit: Apparently skipped When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars. Oh well, not gonna listen to it now. I'll give it a generous 3/10

Living in the south in the early 2010s and having literally every station set to playing modern country was a nightmare

If felt like only 5 new country songs came out a year and they played those back to back for eternity

I hate sounding like a redditor when I complain about modern country but a broken clock is right twice a day. Modern country is some of the worst music ever.

It’s definitely gotten better in the last few years. Country radio playing the fricking Applebees song isn’t helping its image though

Blurred lines was made just to show off Emily something Slavicowski's tits and for that it deserves a better rating

Cruise - Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly

I can only assume that this never made it to the UK, because I don't recognise it at all.

I seem to remember 2013 being a decent year for pop music, but aside from Can't Hold Us this is a very underwhelming list, so either the years are blurring together for me or none of the good songs made the top 10.

Ironically Baauer has gone on to have a really well respected career in the electronic music industry, and his production quality has gone up a ton. He has a really varied style now with a heavy influence of Drum and Bass music and 90s Jungle, and his album “Planet’s Mad” was nominated for a Grammy in 2020.

Harlem Shake still fricking rocks though :boomermonster::boomermonster:

Not really a fan of the genre but this is a massive improvement. 6.4/10

Yeah totally get that, it’s definitely an acquired taste and still relatively niche but it’s cool to see electronic trap artists like RL Grime and Baauer evolve from meme tier in 2013 to something way more layered and tasteful to a group that isn’t a bunch of 16 year olds rolling on MDMA

Can’t Hold Us is definitely the best song on this list by a mile. I’d have to say that the Katy Perry or Bruno Mars songs would be tied for the worst for me. Couldn’t stand that garbage then, can’t stand it now.

Katy Perry definitely has some good songs, but by 2013 she was well past her peak. Totally agree that Can't Hold Us is the best song on that list though

Yeah, her earlier stuff was catchy but not obnoxious. Then she also made the travesty of a song, This is a Part of Me where she rhymed the word me with me. Incredible stuff

I remember that “Brave” by Sara Bareilles was popular around the same time as “Roar.” They sound almost exactly the same.

I deployed to a remote site for 60 days in late 2013 with only 4 hours notice after a major equipment casualty.

Didn't bring any of my hard drives with music, the only thing I had downloaded from Spotify on my phone was the billboard top 40 and Lorde's Pure Heroine album. That's all the music I had to listen to on my runs and to jam out to when I was able to score booze from local nationals.

Learned my lesson and now have my go bag in proper order. 2013 was an awful year for music.
