It's a classic sci-fi story where the authors use an improbable scenario in order to explore important concepts outside of the contexts and presuppositions where you would normally see them - in this case overcoming communication and cultural barriers by joining in a struggle against a shared adversity, or more simply put "Darmok and Gilad at Tenagra".

People who expect Sci-Fi to be realistic, smh.

Troy? What is this 'Troy' thing?

Computer, list all things that are called Troy.

"Troy is an ancient city in what is now Turkey. Troy is the name of a quarterback who played for the Cowboys. The Mk. 14 Troy is a type of s*x toy from the Weimar Republic. Troy is..."

Enough! This is taking forever. Wait...I have an idea! Computer...what is Troy...in the context of Star Trek since that's what we're talking about right now?

"Deanna Troi is a character on TNG."

Of course! I just invented this thing called cross referencing! I'm so smart. Looks like those eight years in Starfleet Academy did not go to waste.
