The "gatekeeping" sub is a goldmine reeing against STEMcels
I always saw this as making fun of the ridiculous one-upping and gatekeeping among the sciences.
Yeah. But I think claiming that math is the 'most pure' and above gatekeeping is probably just an even more obnoxious form of gatekeeping.
What I'm getting from this comic is that sociologists are the only ones among them with any maturity at all. They just ignore the insults and walk away, apparently.
The sociologists are just watching and writing a paper about insecurity and competitiveness among the branches of science
In my experience, that is generally the case.
First Year Engineering Student: UR NOT A REEL SCIENCETISM! I'M TAKING PHYSICS I SO I AM LE REEL SCIENTIFICS!
Sociology Grad: K. goes back to working on their research
And that engineering major drops out following year
Or just maintains a bare C- average, but still acts like he's the god of all things STEM.
In my experience, the more "STEM > ALL" an engineering student is, the lower their GPA.
THE GATEKEEPING IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE
I'm starting Physics soon, and the STEM circlejerk makes me wish I had taken Philosophy.
I DON'T WANT TO BE BETTER THAN OTHER PEOPLE IT'S STRESSFUL ENOUGH BEING OK

History? Theater? Education? That motherlover doesn't know the challenges of any of those fricking courses.
History requires a degree of understanding repeating patterns of similar events, understanding situational context of how events unfolded, comprehension of a multitude of cultural contexts to understand WHY it happened and so much more.
Theater requires a great deal of learning how to act genuine, how to get into a character, of placing emphasis on empathizing and identifying with a role, especially if it's challenging. And that's just on the acting side of it.
Education is one of the most fricking useful, valuable, undermined, undervalued and underpaid job in the fricking world. Without educators, YOU WOULDN'T EVEN FRICKING HAVE PHYSICS OR MATH TEACHERS IN THE FRICKING FIRST PLACE.
new snappy quote?
Imagine having your head so far up your butt that you think theater, english and history, are pointless majors.
Does he think people are fricking morons on a math sub?
I learned what the greatest common denominator divisor was in elementary school ffs
highly upmarseyd comment on this thread
That's basically what my maths teachers did, and it's the main reason why I hate maths now. They were like "Everyone should practically be born with this knowledge, otherwise you're dumb and you won't succeed at anything". Really made me angry.

My favorite time in sociology was waiting for them to talk about a theory on human society. I'm still waiting to this day.

Sociologists have these crazy lists of taboos. Like they refuse to talk about culture competing and succeeding based on fitness purely because any aviation of cultural darwinism is like kryptonite to them.
I had a b-word repeating over and over "cultures do not have genes" like that was in any way relevant.

Don't they genuinely believe every human behavior is non-biological, especially when it comes to behavior between sexes?

Yeah most sociologists are tabula rasa ideologues

Revisionist historians used to say something like that when discussing the Anglo Saxon invasion.
They claimed it was a peaceful migration at low scale and cultural transformation (pottery is not genetics or something of the sort) in order to DEBOONK the invasion theory while saying the 5th century chronists of the invasion like Gildas were unreliable.
But after DNA became available coupled with archeological findings of graves it became clear most of the chromosomal Y DNA of the modern English population comes from the Anglo-Saxons, pointing to an almost full replacement of the old Briton male line. Doesn't look like a peaceful low-scale migration anymore.

They love to claim, or at least used to, that the majority of human migrations were only conducted by small groups of warrior elite who replaced the previous ruling class but leave the lower people alone, and that over time the natives would just "adopt" the ethnicity of their conquerors with very little intermarriage.
However they never seem to argue that that was what happened in a certain country

I really want to see mass dna testing of injuns. We have lots of written evidence that various tribes were simply BWC'd effectively out of existence, to the point where current members look nothing like members from early contact, have none of the same traditions (clothing, dances, rituals all deviate massively from the early written record and in many cases were clearly copied from other more popular tribes much later)
This is all of course very controversial among !leafs injuns, doubly so because if they're basically euros genetically the free money train might stop.

There are many DNA tests on them
US indians are mostly mixed. Most self-identified indians in LATAM are pure-blooded though or pretty close to it.

You can tell because Mayans look like Mayans in the carvings but put on a diet of pure cane sugar instead of their natural diet of the still beating hearts of their enemies

Especially funny because "memes" - the original scientific term, not the "haha text on a picture" internet slang - are literally cultural genes. The idea being that in addition to parents passing down their biological genes to their offspring, they also pass down various cultural elements and value systems to their children.

I explained that concept but it changed nothing. She had no functional understanding of the underlying concepts so no argument could change her beliefs.
College has failed because for most subjects there is no need to prove an actual understanding of the core concepts to pass. Being able to parrot back a definition and point to it when you see it and a key word is used is about the level they teach to in the soft sciences.

That's because sociology is applied marxism (not applied psychology), and to be considered sociologically rigorous a theory must primarily rest on oppressor-oppressed dynamics, as using other explanations would be evopsych which is literally problematic eugenics.

But they do have memes, in the Richard Dawkins sense, and memes serve the exact same function.

Also, aren't fields like sociology or philosophy all about gatekeeping but even more arbitrarily?
Academia is a "gatekeeper" by design as it should be lol.

Well yeah, that's why they require tests before you apply.
But that's "gatekeeping" as much as being a mechanic is by virtue of knowing how to fix cars. One doesn't become an economist because a bunch of economists gatekept economics. It's through learning the cowtools of the trade and applying them. Redditors misuse words all the time because they are r-slurred.
When I really think about it, "gatekeeping" boils down to "having standards." Are redditors really being that arbitrary and stupid?Yes, of course they are.
