!historychads !engineering

The story of a concept design made by Lockheed back in the 60s, a 6,000 tons aircraft with a wingspan of 1,120 ft, it was supposed to be nuclear powered and able to carry up to 22 fighter jets.

Gotta love all those weird Cold War concepts. Mustard also has great vids on Soviet era prototypes like the ekranoplans and the Buran shuttle.

Unrelated to this design but on topic of Cold War planes have you seen or read Firefox? My uncle :marseytedkaczynski: didn't often read fiction :marseykangtheconqueror: except conspiracy :marseyjones: theory :marseyrdramahistorianschizo: stuff but he really :marseythinkorino2: loved that one. It's one I held onto after he passed but I haven't picked it up yet as my :marseyautism: is different.

By the time Thomas began :marseyitsover: writing :marseynotes: Firefox the Soviets had introduced into operational service :marseygreytide: the MiG-25 Foxbat, the fastest interceptor aircraft :marseychineseballoon: in the world, with a top speed of Mach 2.8. Its appearance in the USSR and the Near East (overflying Israel :marseyisiscry: with impunity) caused a stir in Western :marseybootscoot: aviation and intelligence :marseysnappyenraged2: communities. Thomas' fictional MiG-31 was depicted on the cover of many printings as the Mig-25.

No, I haven't

Thomas' fictional MiG-31 was depicted on the cover of many printings as the Mig-25.

Lmao, what's funny is that the real life Mig-31 is basically an upgraded Mig-25

I think :marseyhyperthonk: you checked link but for people reading :marseyhijab: only on rdrama :marseyhammerpizza: the film adaptation was Clint Eastwood and had great  reviews at the time so probably worth checking out. He showed it to me as a child :marseypedoshoot: when visiting but I don't recall how I felt. I guess :marseyshrug: I am the weird :marseyautismdisconcerting: one for having fixations :autism: other than war/military tech since normally guys like us are more towards your end of the "spectrum". :marseywink: :marseyblowkiss:

Why am I the ways that I am? :marseythinkorino:

For me is not even military tech, just planes/rockets/balloons/airships, in other words, anything that flies. But it goes in hand with military stuff as the craziest aircraft designs were made by the military.

Why am I the ways that I am? :marseythinkorino:

Because you're already a church/theology/philosophy sperg (and apparently you have a fascination with watches/clocks as well), those seem to be your special interests.

There's a wonderful podcast from the team at This American :marseymagahat: Life who released a one-off series :marseychartscatter: called "S-Town". It's genuinely very good if a bit voyeuristic and follows the life of an neurodivergent :marseyautismchonker: horologist who became wealthy/famous for casting authentic replica components for antique clocks before :marseyskellington: becoming increasingly reclusive and combative. The story :marseyslime: involves his closeted homosexual :marseyfemboy: tendencies, lost buried gold, and a town full of people trying to find it while telling the tale of his life. !followers check :marseyelonpaypig: this out, also I'll stop using that ping but IDK who else to tell. @Redactor0 @Grue

When it was released a friend :marseychinchilla2: of mine sent it to me saying it sounded a bit like me and my uncle. :marseymespecial: I actually :marseyakshually: wasn't very much into clocks until listening to that. Anyway, worth trying, it's 7-8 hours in total but you'll know quickly if you find it worth pursuing all the way through. McLemore's other special :marseykindness: interest was climate doomerism, which takes on aspects of theological eschatology in many ways.

Sounds like something I can fall asleep to. The This American Life people have turned into raving lunatics, but at least on this subject they probably won't advocate murdering random cops.

Early This American :marseyjetbombing: Life was great  and this one is more slice-of-life. Very good overall.

Yeah, I used to listen to it every week. Until NPR decided to do everything they possibly could to alienate me.

Some time during the BLM era. There was that guy in Dallas who shot a bunch of cops at a protest. They cornered him inside a building. He wouldn't come out, so eventually they took one of their bomb disposal robots and used it as a bomb delivery robot and blew him up. This American Life had a segment about how this guy was a victim of police violence. It's one of those moments where you realize that to these people your life has no value if you're not part of the current fad. The kind of thing that shocks you until realizing it's us or them.

I found it to be interesting but felt like they went in looking for more of a story that existed.

been ages since I listened though, maybe I should go through it again.

SERIAL was fun while it was airing, I think that was the only "event" podcast I remember.

Yeah, it's meandering and ended up being an extended slice of life with a bunch of almost-were exciting stories (murder mystery, lost gold, etc). I still enjoyed it because it was a holistic view into the life of someone with severe mental health issues. Whether it was exploitative of the subjects or too personal given that he wasn't there to sign off on the project, IDK.

SERIAL was fun back at the time but the later iterations haven't been quite as good IMO.

It's a pretty good Cold War spy movie. Nothing too special but you'll enjoy it if you're into that kind of thing.

the MiG-25 Foxbat, the fastest interceptor aircraft in the world, with a top speed of Mach 2.8. Its appearance in the USSR and the Near East (overflying Israel with impunity) caused a stir in Western aviation and intelligence communities

It caused a real panic until somebody defected with one and it turned out while it was extremely fast it had lots of other shortcomings, stuff that you'd never know until you got your hands on one. Like you have to totally rebuild the engine after reaching that speed.

I heard an interview with the daughter of the CIA guy who was in charge of debriefing him. She said he was really dreamy and she had a huge crush on him. :marseyblush:
