Probably entirely made up, but if he's being genuine he probably just started paying attention to homeless and doesn't realize they just disappear. They leave for another city, they get bullied/crimed by another homeless to go stay away, get hospitalized, get locked up, get help or shelter, die, get moved in an unannounced police homeless sweep. Now they're not along his route or at the soup kitchen he volunteers at once a month to have cute conversations with so to him they have "disappeared."
I hate everyone with parasocial relationships with homeless so much. It's so fricking patronizing. They're not any better than the frat boys who used to make videos in the 00s of paying homeless in booze to do awful stuff.
