An old underground backup generator for Sweden's biggest airport. It's right outside the airport so while trying to find it I felt a bit suspicious.

This is actually inside and underground, not outdoors.

I've always wanted to get into this urban exploring stuff but idk where to find likeminded people on account of the fact that it's illegal.

I was part of an afterschool racially diverse goonies-type gang that explored old tunnels/buildings, such is life as a wigger.

I can only speak for Sweden but I'm not really worried about the legality at all. As long as the place is completely abandoned and there are no attempts at keeping people out there shouldn't be much of a risk. Like for this generator there isn't a single fence or "no entry" sign. Even if someone were to show up just apologize and say that you love history and photography (i.e. not a junkie).

Do you know what the legality is like if something happens? Like if you get injured.

From my (German) legal knowledge that is the biggest issue. Someone owns the place and theoretically you can sue that person/company.

Not sure tbh. The property owner will probably be forced to "prevent further harm" and put up a fence but I doubt that they would get blamed and pay damages. Suing barely exists in Sweden.

I don't mind the illegality per se, I just don't know where to find people to do it with I guess. Like if I don't know anybody who does mountain hiking I can just go on Facebook but idk about this.

Mountain hikers probably overlap significantly with urban explorers:marseydance:

I think most outdoorsy people in general would be pretty down to check out an abandoned building. Urban exploring isn't inherently illegal so nobody should mind being asked.

This is like 70% speculation but this reminds me of abandoned Cold War military sites. In the 1950s there was a period where Sweden was actually serious about national defense. To the point where the CIA considered them as one of the main risks for nuclear proliferation. (Source: My name is "Redactor", I've read the documents.)

Also being at an airbase. If war broke out the Soviets didn't give a shit if it was civilian or in a "neutral" country, they were going to nuke every runway in the Free World. (Sweden also gave the US a list of targets they wanted nuked. Very fascinating behavior from a "neutral" country.) Anyway the point I'm trying to make is that around the 1950s-1960s Russian missiles weren't very accurate. So maybe this is like is Cheyenne Mountain in the USA or countless other places built in the same era. Built for a nuclear war that you could hopefully kinda win before missiles got accurate. People were weird about that back then.

Weird. Why's it underground? Seems like bad idea. Don't generators require huge parts and let off bunch of gas. Sweden was starved for land? What's going on here!!!?

!schizos I don't like this!!!

Maybe the airport used to have military radar and/or a full SAM battery and this was to make sure they stayed powered even if the airport was bombed. Looks like some Cold War-era type of shit to me.

Why's it underground

Protection from crashing planes. Since it's dug into rock you don't have to worry much about the mole people.

don't generators require huge parts

Depends on the type. For one to run an airport on minimum systems you're not looking at a huuuuge one. The main requirement for space would probably be fuel rather than the jenny.

Do you ever worry about mold or other hazards? Seems like a good place to die from deoxygenated air.

This was my first time going to a bigger underground complex so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I brought a 4 gas monitor but the air was very "asbestosy" so I'll definitely be bringing a proper mask in the future as well.
