>I move people for a living and the "Just move" comments make me pretty irrate. Moving is incredibly expensive and time consuming if you do it yourself, not to mention needing to break a lease or some other credit damaging action.

Wtf are these people on? Moving can be done for a few hundred dollars

We're moving in about a month and the largest expenses I'm looking at is renting a van for the day (100 bucks) and buying beer+bbq stuff for the lads that help us pack our things (another 150 if we splurge)

Idk how people move that it costs them thousand of dollars. Just have friends lmao

I move across the country every few years, movers cost a pretty penny

Well it's different if you move 1000s of miles instead of like a hundred

This probably explains 90% of their issues

Well yeah if you bum the labor off your friends it's cheap.

But even hired labor isn't that bad. Maybe $400 at each end to hire 2-3 guys to move everything into and out of the moving truck. The truck will be far more than $100 (lmao do all your possessions really fit in a standard cargo van?) but still under a thousand. Total, all-in, for a cross-country move and hired labor at each end, is still a bit under $2k.

In other words less than a month's rent in LA.

Nah but I have a mate with a large trailer and a van so I only need to rent one additional van to fit everything that doesn't go in a car. If I didn't have access to those that would probably be another 200€ for the day. Still not massive

I wouldn't even call it bumming it off friends. I've gladly helped several of my friends and family members move on many occasions, to me that goes without saying and is just part of being a friend. We always compensate the helpers with food and beer for the day so it's usually a pretty nice day together all things considered :marseyshrug:

I'm not saying bumming off your friends like that is necessarily bad but that's still what it is. Plus you're likely to not have friends at your destination for a cross-country move, plus it'll be more than $200 for a moving truck and you'll need it for more than a single day.

But I've already noticed the issue here. You're a European so you don't understand that some countries aren't as tiny as your own.

I've moved across my country multiple times. It's really not as bad as redditors make it out to be. They're just fricking lazy and want any excuse to not change their lives.
