You could be spot on with the marriage. This is why my spouse and I (and coworkers) do married filing separately for taxes. Separate my payments are in the $700s. Joint they are almost $2k. I have grad loans and am in PSLF though

lol one of my coworkers ran into this. basically he makes really good money, his (newly married) wife made very little in comparison. She had a ton of loans on IBR that she never planned on paying off (via PSLF). He asked me about some financial stuff and I asked if they were filing jointly or separately. He said well jointly obviously, and I pointed out the student loan thing. He had no idea that would cause her payments to go up.

Some people just don't understand finances at all.
