Poor made $200k a year for two years and has nothing to show for it

https://old.reddit.com/r/Layoffs/comments/1c63vex/wellhad_20k_in_savings_back_in_october_now_i_have/?sort=controversial

The unemployment ran out. Sold stuff. Feels like I'm set back about five years.

I hate the new job btw, they want me to work like a W2 employee but classify me as a contractor (I put in 65 hours last week, only paid for 40). Obv no healthcare.

Still in tech, and I didn't save as much as I should have but I've only ever made decent money for a little over two years in my entire adult life. Prior to that I think I maybe cleared 50k. When I hit six figures I finally traveled and enjoyed things.

Looks like that was the peak of my existence and now I feel like an old frick. If I didn't have supportive people in my life I wouldn't still be in it.

There's no point to this post other than I finally felt like I was living the life I imagined I would have back when I was an early 20s grindset jockey, and for what? Two years of a good life?

I threw away a lot of youth and not peepeeing around or enjoying my 20s because I thought that's what I needed to do to make my 30s easy. It didn't matter.

Maybe some of you have it figured out. I for fricking sure don't.

You learned the a hard important rule of having money. Make sure you pay the house (your savings). Saving 20k on 200k salary is hilariously terrible.

You're not wrong, I think I was increasingly challenging myself on how much shit I could buy. The work was stressful and I thought I had hit the lottery.

Definitely didn't realize how good I had it until it was gone.

200k per year, no family and he still couldn't save? Also, why is he so depressed? He was a high earner in his 20s and he's in his early 30s is not like he's 50s and wasted, he's young enough to rebound into a well paying job, again it would be more concerning if he had a family to provide for which is not the case.

The bits in bold show why he's depressed. He worked hard for money in his youth and didn't focus on enjoying his life, and now that he finally let himself live a little after clearing a certain income threshold he's back at square 1. Maybe being single adds to that depression :chuditsover:

I don't know how he couldn't save though, especially since he says he didn't travel or do fun activities. Maybe he consoomed a lot or paid high rent. :marseybeggar:

Reddits anonymity makes it a place for people to vent so he's prob just typing into the void.

Tbh I actually get this, I had a good job where I finally hit an income I was proud of and after a year and a half the company decided to fill their home office and just fired me since I already set up the department they wanted. Shitty feeling, it's been 6 months and I'm still looking for something.

The biggest fear isn't having to adjust to lower income, it's thinking those years or working so hard were just a waste of time. I get where the redditors is coming from, it's an incredibly shitty and depressing feeling

Yeah, I get losing a high paying job will make you feel gloomy

He said he started to travel and enjoy things after hitting 6 figures. Still, it's a lot of money to blew it all so quickly lol, did he stay in 5 star hotels and dined in Michelin restaurants on every trip? He doesn't mention being a homeowner or having to pay a mortgage so I assume he rented a place.

80k is still a lot of money if you dont live in a libtard city with 4k/month rent.

That's pretty much the problem with these r-slurs. If they move like 20-30 mins out of the city they can stretch their income so much more.

But no, they'd rather pay through the nose for a 5-minute commute in a walkable city :soyjakwow: and then b-word about not saving anything.

Depends on the city. If you live in San Francisco and move 30 minutes north or south, you end up in either Marin or Palo Alto. That doesn't stretch your income.

I get not saving if you at least wipe out debts. Car paid off? Down so massive your mortgage costs like $800/mo? Student loans gone and now debt free? Thats perfectly fine but he went full r-slur. Even if you travelmax its still like $10-15k max for 2 extremely luxurious and quite lengthy vacations in expensive first world destinations.

Yeah, he doesn't mention any of that stuff, had he bought a house it would make sense and make it understandable, he simply states he “started to enjoy life” not that he started paying off debts.

I was making about that much when I was his age and also saved about as much as he did. Yeah rent and car in a big city takes up more than most people realize but I could have saved more than the paltry amount I did. Why ddn't I? I spent about 3k per month on strippers and whores. Of the all the things I spent money on, I regret that the least. It was likely being in rock star fantasy camp. Fortunately, I make way more than 200k now.

I'm not insane, I just want to have some fun then curl up inside a vagina and either suffocate or be crushed by a well-trained set of pelvic floor muscles.
