Hello, welcome to 'I see the poors are pretending to be big wallet gangstas again'
This hole exists as a safe space for refugees from the Facebook(MetaTM groups of the same name. Of which there have been several iterations. We mostly exist to poke fun at the state of living in poverty. While it oftentimes is unavoidable, we do aspire to not be meanspirited. Over the years we have co-opted the term 'Peak Poor' to being someone who exudes poverty, regardless of their actual net worth. Trump and Elon both exhibit the peak poor ethos from time to time while still being the top 0.000001%. You can do something peak poor and still be a good person or a generally adjusted one. We all have a bit of poor in us.
We basically fill a niche similar to fatpeoplehate with a bit less actual malice.
PeakPoor is shotgunning mountain dews at 5 years old.
PeakPoor is not people dying of poverty. While technically the greatest heights of poverty is succumbing to it this is not funny, and is a failure
of capitalism. We do not make fun of poverty to be mean spirited such as that.
Read the room, if it's punching down too hard or really digging into someone whos a sympathetic character it doesn't belong here. (basically READ THE ROOM)

Yes I'm saying that she agrees with me that the (perception of, at least) wealth beyond basic comfort is more of a burden than a blessing speaking as an actual expat. Maybe narcissists or normies would feel differently? I grew up in religious schools surrounded by that crowd and they're all cut from the same cloth in terms of being upper-middle/lower-upper in the USA but maintaining a fairly austere lifestyle beyond the occasional vacation.
I'm not being coy or whatever, it's genuinely obnoxious to get a ton of attention and that was the thread between the two thoughts. My nuclear (

Neighbor I'm a 6'5 white guy living in a poor Asian country (average height 5'0 for women 5'2 for men) and plane tickets are 1k+ USD a pop to even get over here. Beggers/vendors/scammers/pimps approach me all the time. I don't walk around flashing cash or something.

Any American is rich by Filipino standards of living which is the whole point of the OP I was responding to about being an expat, the average combined household income is ~$500 a month (probably more like $750 in Manila). I never said I'm rich in America. Though you should check the data, Fil-Ams and Asian women now outearn white guys in America (average 80k+). !Pinoypride

I have said way too much about my personal life to want to give that out, the amount I'm online should make it believable I'm WFHceling and my wife is in healthcare (she earned more than me when we met).
I'm also getting a second degree in philosophy (I want a master's in theology both to try to actually have informed opinions on things and to volunteer/teach later when we're back in the US) and am starting my sophomore year soon.

I'm not fully fluent yet but know the basics. English is the official language for anything government/contractual and the private universities teach in it. We usually go to English services for Mass.
I want my wife/family to use Tagalog/Bicol at home because if the kids want to get degrees I'm going to force them into the military or send them here if they don't have scholarships. Tuition at the top universities is ~1-2k vs 10k+ a year in the US.

It's a bit taller than that in Manila probably, especially in BGC/Makati (rich parts of the metro) where nutrition isn't an issue for kids but yeah people here are really short. I have a good pic someone took of me in the middle of the crowd during the Good Friday procession this year but I don't feel like scrolling through my gallery and cropping my face right now.
I can literally not fit in visually, there's no avoiding it. I wear a Casio and while my clothes are more expensive than what most locals wear it's just average middle class white guy stuff in America (rugby shirts/button downs and jeans if we're indoors).
@lain go to Mexico or something sometime and it's pretty similar, a tall gringo is a magnet.

Years ago when I went to Panama with my parents and sister it was the same, the resort staff would speak to me English, same with my mom even though she doesn't speak any English, but because she's blonde haired and 5'10" tall they just presumed "American" lol.
